प्राचीन काल की यह घटना भगवान श्रीराम के जीवन की सबसे मार्मिक और भक्तिभाव से भरी घटनाओं में से एक है। यह कथा शबरी नामक एक वृद्धा की है, जो निषाद जनजाति से थी और महान ऋषि मतंग की शिष्या थी।
शबरी बचपन से ही भगवान के प्रति अत्यंत श्रद्धावान थीं। जब उनके गुरु मतंग ऋषि ने शरीर त्याग किया, तब उन्होंने अंतिम शब्दों में कहा था, “शबरी, एक दिन भगवान श्रीराम स्वयं यहाँ पधारेंगे। तब तक तुम यहीं रहकर भक्ति करो।”
शबरी ने अपने गुरु की बातों पर पूर्ण विश्वास किया। वर्षों तक उन्होंने आश्रम में रहकर रोज़ सफाई की, फूल सजाए, और प्रतिदिन फल तोड़कर उन्हें चख-चखकर सबसे मीठे फल प्रभु राम के लिए चुनकर रखती रहीं। लोग उनका मज़ाक उड़ाते थे कि क्या राम सच में आएंगे? लेकिन शबरी की श्रद्धा अडिग रही।
और फिर वह पावन दिन आया।
भगवान श्रीराम अपने वनवास के दौरान लक्ष्मण के साथ शबरी के आश्रम पहुँचे। जैसे ही शबरी ने प्रभु को देखा, उनकी आँखों से अश्रुधारा बह निकली। उन्होंने श्रीराम को झुककर प्रणाम किया और उन्हें अपने संजोए हुए मीठे बेर अर्पित किए। भगवान राम ने अत्यंत प्रेम से वे बेर खाए, चाहे वे पहले शबरी द्वारा चखे हुए ही क्यों न थे। लक्ष्मण को थोड़ी हैरानी हुई, लेकिन श्रीराम ने कहा, “इन बेरों में शुद्ध भक्ति और प्रेम है। यह अमृत से भी बढ़कर हैं।”
शबरी की तपस्या और प्रेम को श्रीराम ने स्वीकार कर उन्हें मुक्ति प्रदान की। यह घटना दर्शाती है कि ईश्वर जाति, उम्र, या स्थिति नहीं देखते — वे केवल निष्कलंक प्रेम और सच्ची भक्ति को पहचानते हैं।

This ancient episode is one of the most touching and devotion-filled moments from the life of Lord Shri Ram. It is the story of Shabari, an elderly woman from the tribal Nishad community and a devout disciple of Sage Matanga.
From a young age, Shabari was deeply devoted to the Lord. When her guru, Sage Matanga, left his mortal body, his final words to her were:
“Shabari, one day Lord Ram himself will come to this very place. Until then, remain here and serve with devotion.”
Trusting these words wholeheartedly, Shabari stayed at the hermitage for years. Every day, she cleaned the ashram, decorated it with flowers, and hand-picked forest berries. She would taste each berry to ensure it was sweet, keeping only the best ones for Lord Ram. Villagers often mocked her, doubting if Ram would ever come. But Shabari’s faith never wavered.
Then, that divine day arrived.
During his exile, Lord Ram, along with his brother Lakshman, reached Shabari’s hermitage. The moment Shabari saw them, her eyes welled up with tears of joy. She bowed before the Lord and offered him the sweet berries she had lovingly preserved. Ram accepted them with great affection—even though she had already tasted them. Lakshman was surprised, but Lord Ram smiled and said,
“These berries are filled with pure devotion and love. They are sweeter than nectar.”
Recognizing Shabari’s pure love, Lord Ram blessed her and granted her liberation (moksha). This story teaches us that God does not judge by caste, age, or status—He responds only to unconditional love and sincere devotion.
