When we think of Lord Shiva, the first image that comes to mind is of a fearless god. The destroyer, the Mahadeva, who dances the Tandava on the battlefield, who drinks the venom of the universe without hesitation, who sits calmly with a serpent coiled around his neck. He is the one who gives refuge to the frightened, who protects his devotees even from death itself.
But there exists a story in our scriptures that feels so strange, so ironical, that the very first reaction of anyone hearing it is disbelief:
“How can Mahadev, the fearless, ever have to run away to save his own life? And that too, from one of his own devotees?”
Yes, this is exactly what happened. A devotee, intoxicated with power and pride, turned so dangerous that even the Great God himself had to escape.
The Beginning of the Tale – Bhasmasura’s Penance
Once upon a time, there was a powerful demon named Bhasmasura. Like most asuras, he too desired extraordinary powers, and for that, he turned towards penance. Whom did he worship? Not Brahma, not Vishnu – but Mahadev himself, the most easily pleased of all deities, whom the scriptures fondly call “Bholenath.”
Bhasmasura meditated with intense austerity. Days turned into months, months into years. Standing on one leg, fasting, chanting the name of Shiva – his body became weak, but his determination grew stronger.
Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him, pleased with his devotion. Shiva asked:
“O devotee, what boon do you desire?”
The Shocking Boon
Now comes the twist. Bhasmasura, in his heart, had already made a dangerous plan. He asked Shiva for a boon that stunned even the gods in heaven.
He said:
“O Lord, grant me this power – that whomever I place my hand upon, that person should immediately turn into ashes (bhasma).”
Shiva, true to his nature, never differentiated between good and bad devotees. Once he promised, he never went back on his word. Without a second thought, he granted Bhasmasura the boon.
And just like that, the asura became “Bhasmasura” – the one with the power to reduce anyone to ashes.
The Devotee Turns Against the Lord
At first, the gods thought, “Perhaps he will use this power against other demons.” But pride corrupts, and immense power intoxicates.
Drunk with arrogance, Bhasmasura looked at Shiva himself and thought:
“If I can turn anyone into ashes with just a touch, why not try it on the very god who gave me this power? Then I will be the greatest – no one will be above me.”
Yes, his madness went so far that he decided to test the boon on Shiva himself.
With his hand raised, glowing with destructive energy, Bhasmasura charged towards Shiva, determined to place it on his head.
Shiva Runs
Now imagine this scene: Mahadev, who had once swallowed poison for the sake of the universe, who had fought with the fiercest asuras, suddenly found himself in a situation where his own gift had turned into a death trap.
If Bhasmasura touched him even by mistake, Shiva’s body would turn into ash. The lord of destruction would himself be destroyed.
So, what did Shiva do? He ran.
Yes, the all-powerful Mahadev, chased by his own devotee, ran across mountains, forests, and rivers. The gods watched this unbelievable scene from above. Some trembled, some wept, and some prayed for a miracle.
The Gods in Distress
The other deities were restless. If Shiva, their protector, was caught, who would save the universe?
They rushed to Lord Vishnu, the preserver. Only he, with his wisdom and strategy, could think of a way to end this madness.
Vishnu’s Clever Plan – The Form of Mohini
Vishnu smiled, as if he had already known this moment would come. Taking the form of the enchanting Mohini, the goddess of unparalleled beauty, Vishnu descended in front of Bhasmasura.
The asura, distracted from his chase, stopped in his tracks. His eyes widened, his arrogance softened into desire. The deadly power in his hands now longed not for destruction, but for possession.
Mohini, with her charm and grace, danced before him. Her movements were so captivating that Bhasmasura forgot everything – his boon, his madness, even Shiva.
The Dance of Death
Mohini spoke sweetly:
“O mighty one, if you wish to win me, you must first prove yourself. Dance with me, follow my every move.”
Bhasmasura, blinded by lust, agreed immediately.
Mohini began her divine dance. Step by step, hand by hand, she twirled gracefully. The asura copied her eagerly, his focus only on impressing her.
Finally, Mohini raised her hand and placed it upon her own head in a graceful gesture. Without a thought, Bhasmasura imitated her.
And in that very moment, the curse of his own boon struck him. As soon as his hand touched his head, his entire body turned to ashes. The demon who had dared to challenge Shiva was destroyed by his own arrogance.
What This Story Teaches Us
This tale is not just a myth – it is a mirror of human nature.
- Power without wisdom is dangerous
– Bhasmasura got immense power, but no wisdom to handle it. That power destroyed him. - Shiva’s innocence
– Bholenath gives without calculation. He doesn’t see cunning in the heart of his devotees, only their devotion. Sometimes, that very simplicity brings trouble even to him. - Vishnu’s strategy balances Shiva’s innocence
– The world needs both: Shiva’s boundless generosity and Vishnu’s clever strategy. Together, they maintain balance in the universe. - Ego leads to self-destruction
– Just as Bhasmasura burnt himself with his own hand, our arrogance too consumes us from within.
A Scene That Stays With You
Picture it for a moment: the Himalayas echoing with the footsteps of Mahadev, the earth trembling under his pace, and behind him, an arrogant asura with a flaming hand ready to destroy his very master.
And then, the sudden appearance of Mohini – beauty and strategy woven together – turning destruction into self-destruction.
This is why the story is unforgettable. It tells us that even gods can be tested, that even the mightiest may face situations where they must flee, but in the end, the balance of the cosmos always finds a way.
Not an Ending, But a Thought
So the answer to the question is this:
Why did Shiva have to run to save his life from his own devotee?
Because sometimes, the simplicity of giving can clash with the cunning of receiving. Because even gods allow their devotees free will, and in that free will lies the possibility of both devotion and destruction.
And most importantly, to remind us that arrogance, no matter how powerful, always ends in ashes.
✨ That’s the beauty of these stories. They don’t just entertain; they leave you with an aftertaste, a whisper of wisdom that lingers long after the tale is told.
