He defeated the gods, drove them out of heaven, and claimed the throne of the universe.
Helpless and defeated, the gods went to the Trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). The three supreme beings were enraged by Mahishasura’s tyranny. Their anger combined and created a dazzling light, so powerful that it outshone the sun. From this light emerged a divine female form — Durga.
Each god offered her weapons: Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu gave her his Sudarshan Chakra, Indra gave her his thunderbolt, Varuna gave her his conch, and Agni gave her fire. She was radiant, fierce, and unstoppable.
But here comes the interesting part: in the Katyayana Rishi’s lineage, a sage named Katyayana performed deep penance to invite the Goddess to his home. It is said that Durga manifested in his house as his daughter. Thus, she came to be known as Katyayani, the daughter of Katyayana.
It was in this form that she led the battle against Mahishasura. The fight lasted for nine long days and nights, and on the tenth day, she finally defeated him, restoring balance in the universe. This day is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra.

माँ कात्यायनी – नवरात्रि की छठी देवी
नवरात्रि का पर्व दिन-ब-दिन भक्तिभाव और ऊर्जा से भरता जाता है। जैसे-जैसे हम एक-एक दिन माँ दुर्गा के अलग-अलग स्वरूप की पूजा करते हैं, वैसे-वैसे यह एहसास गहरा होता जाता है कि माँ केवल शक्ति ही नहीं, बल्कि दया, करुणा और साहस का संगम भी हैं।
छठे दिन हम जिस स्वरूप की पूजा करते हैं, वह हैं माँ कात्यायनी। माँ का यह रूप वीरता और शक्ति का प्रतीक माना जाता है। माँ कात्यायनी ही वो देवी हैं जिन्होंने असुर महिषासुर का संहार किया और धर्म की रक्षा की।
माँ कात्यायनी का जन्म
पुराणों के अनुसार, एक समय जब महिषासुर नामक राक्षस ने तीनों लोकों में आतंक मचा रखा था, देवता भी असहाय हो गए। सब देवता मिलकर भगवान विष्णु, शिव और ब्रह्मा के पास पहुँचे। तब तीनों महाशक्तियों ने मिलकर अपने तेज से एक देवी को प्रकट किया।
वह देवी थीं – कात्यायनी।
कहा जाता है कि महर्षि कात्य ने कई वर्षों तक तप किया था कि माँ भगवती उनके घर जन्म लें। उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर माँ ने उनके घर प्रकट होकर महिषासुर के विनाश का कार्य किया। इसीलिए उन्हें कात्यायनी कहा जाता है।
माँ कात्यायनी का स्वरूप
माँ कात्यायनी का रूप अद्भुत और शक्तिशाली बताया गया है।
- वे सिंह पर सवार रहती हैं।
- उनकी चार भुजाएँ हैं –
- एक हाथ में तलवार,
- दूसरे में कमल,
- तीसरे में वर-मुद्रा,
- और चौथे में अभय-मुद्रा।
उनके चेहरे पर तेज और करुणा का ऐसा संतुलन है, जिसे देखकर भक्त भयमुक्त हो जाते हैं।
माँ कात्यायनी और महिषासुर वध
महिषासुर एक ऐसा राक्षस था जिसे वरदान मिला था कि कोई पुरुष या देवता उसे नहीं मार सकता। अपने अहंकार में उसने स्वर्ग पर अधिकार कर लिया और देवताओं को निकाल दिया।
देवताओं की प्रार्थना पर प्रकट हुई माँ कात्यायनी ने महिषासुर के साथ भयंकर युद्ध किया। कभी वह भैंसे का रूप लेता, कभी शेर का, कभी हाथी का। लेकिन अंततः माँ ने अपने त्रिशूल और तलवार से उसका अंत कर दिया।
यही कारण है कि उन्हें महिषासुर मर्दिनी भी कहा जाता है।
पूजा का महत्व
नवरात्रि के छठे दिन माँ कात्यायनी की पूजा विशेष महत्व रखती है।
- ब्रज क्षेत्र में परंपरा है कि गोपिकाएँ माँ कात्यायनी की पूजा करती थीं ताकि उन्हें श्रीकृष्ण जैसा पति मिल सके।
- माना जाता है कि इस दिन की पूजा से विवाह में आने वाली अड़चनें दूर होती हैं।
- माँ कात्यायनी की कृपा से जीवन में साहस और आत्मविश्वास बढ़ता है।
पूजा विधि
छठे दिन सुबह जल्दी उठकर स्नान करके माँ कात्यायनी की प्रतिमा या तस्वीर के सामने दीपक जलाएँ।
- पीले या लाल फूल अर्पित करें।
- शहद का भोग चढ़ाना विशेष फलदायी माना गया है।
- माँ के मंत्र का जाप करें –

यह कथा दिखाती है कि माँ कात्यायनी केवल शक्ति ही नहीं, बल्कि भक्तों की मनोकामनाएँ पूरी करने वाली भी हैं।

आधुनिक जीवन में जब लोग चुनौतियों और डर से घिरे रहते हैं, माँ कात्यायनी की पूजा आत्मबल देती है।
- जिन युवाओं को अपने भविष्य को लेकर चिंता है, माँ कात्यायनी का ध्यान उन्हें विश्वास देती है।
